What is a tiered loyalty program?
Tiered loyalty program
A tiered loyalty program is a type of customer rewards program in which members are placed into different membership levels — or “tiers” — based on their cumulative spending, visits, or engagement with a brand.
Each tier offers increasingly valuable rewards and benefits, creating a strong incentive for customers to spend more in order to advance to the next level. The more a customer engages with a brand, the greater the perks they unlock.
This structure is used widely across industries — from airlines and hotels to coffee shops and retail stores — and is one of the most effective loyalty models for driving long-term customer value.
How does a tiered loyalty program work?
A customer starts at the entry level when they first join the program. As they accumulate points, make purchases, or hit predefined milestones, they move up to higher tiers. Each new tier unlocks a richer set of rewards.
Common tier structures include three levels, often named Bronze, Silver, and Gold — or similarly evocative labels. Brands can define their own tier names to align with their identity.
